It's ironic that many who claim to be open minded are actually closed minded. In other words, they're only open minded with those who share their "progressive" points of view and are unwilling to engage with those who disagree with their basic tenets. But, this behavior is the crux of their objection to closed mindedness in the first place.
If you're going to bother having a conversation with someone you disagree with, be open to having your mind changed or you're wasting your time. Everyone deserves a chance to explain their worldview regardless of how different it is from your own. The only way you'll figure out why you've come to different conclusions is to talk through your thought processes and assumptions. Genuinely listening to others is a prerequisite to open mindedness. If you can't listen, you're likely being hypocritical.
