If we cared about increasing voter turnout, we would make election day a holiday, to increase the probability that people would vote. But unfortunately, more resources are being devoted to instituting voter ID laws and resisting improvements to cumbersome voter registration processes.
No one should feel the need to choose between going to work and being able to vote. But, due to the hours that polling stations are open, I'm sure plenty of registered voters never end up casting their ballots because it's inconvenient. In theory, this is their own fault. Anyone should be able to register for absentee ballots if they foresee this being a problem. But, why not just make the default method of voting easier?
Giving people the day off for election day seems like a cheap price to pay for improving the health of our democracy.
