It bothers me that in the wake of random acts of violence, many people are quick to call for direct military action, even though they're unwilling to fight themselves. While I understand the desire for action, we can't lose sight of the fact that we're asking people to risk their lives.
In many ways this is a more extreme example of asking people to put their money where their mouth is. If you're unwilling to have loved ones die for a cause, you shouldn't be willing to ask others to. I suspect that the trend of assuming that wars will be fought by others has made people more comfortable demanding military solutions when there may be other options.
If we're capricious in sending our volunteer military into harms way unnecessarily, people will be less willing to volunteer in the future.
