Rising Islamaphobia is scary. If you replace muslim with jew in these bigoted statements, they're eerily reminiscent of the explicit anti-semitism during the Third Reich. Are people unable to see the parallels? Or do they simply not care?
I'm concerned that these intolerant voices are being heard loudest. We can't simply dismiss these sentiments as outliers. We need to convince people of the unacceptability of these statements because for every person willing to voice these opinions publicly, there are many more who harbor them silently.
I wish I could ask people espousing these views to consider the veil of ignorance. How would they feel living in a society where the roles were reversed? To be in favor of exclusion and intolerance, you need to be willing to follow the same logic even when nouns are replaced, otherwise it's just discriminatory.
