Daylight savings time was originally devised to save electricity. But, its current effectiveness is heavily disputed and it's known to negatively affect public safety, health, and economic coordination.
Instead of eliminating daylight savings time, I'd prefer we eliminate timezones all together. There's no reason that we all need to eat lunch when the clock reads 1200. Why not have everyone use UTC? Different parts of the world would still be free to adopt different norms for doing local business. For example, some parts of the world may opt to have normal working hours from 0900 to 1700, while others may choose 2000 to 0400.
This solves all of the problems that arise from coordinating across timezones, which are surprisingly numerous and costly in terms of money and time. Moreover, these problems only get worse as the world becomes increasingly interconnected.
