Have you ever had trouble ordering an Uber from a hotel lobby or airport? It turns out you're not imagining things. Marriott has been blocking customers' personal wireless modems. This practice is cowardly and anti-competitive. Companies shouldn't feel the need to resort to signal jamming in order to upsell us on internet access.
Hotels claim to be doing this to protect customers from cyber attacks. But, how is forcing people through a predictable bottleneck protecting them? This only makes the attack vector simpler.
Don't fall victim to this. If you're having trouble connecting to the internet over public wifi, try disabling wifi and use your cellular connection instead. If they're blocking your cellular signal, read them the riot act. Go on social media and publicly shame them. The FCC needs to strongly ban jamming frequencies as a way of business.
