Whenever I put something in a special place so I won't lose it, I inevitably struggle to find it when I actually need it. To help myself resist this temptation, I try to keep track of things in bundles. Because I'm much less likely to misplace my backpack than to misplace a loose gift card, I'm better off keeping them together. By bundling things together, I just need to remember which bundle something's in instead of its exact whereabouts.
At first I thought this would work best for physical things, but I've found this technique works just as well for keeping track of digital things that I haven't named descriptively yet. Instead of trying to remember where exactly any specific thing is, I have a heuristic for where I'd put it; that way there's less to remember to stay organized.
