Exiting the subway

When I get off the subway I often feel like a fish swimming upstream as I weave through people rushing the other way to catch the train I'm getting off. While I understand that everyone wants to take the shortest route to their eventual destination, I wonder whether we'd all be better served if we all got off in a certain direction, so there'd be a consistent flow of passengers off the platform instead of a free for all.

Here's one way that this could work: every passenger looking to get on a train would go down stairs on the north side and every passenger that's getting off would proceed up to street level by coming up stairs on the south side. Then, from the ticket lobby, where there's more room to maneuver, people could proceed to their desired exits.
