My parents have a hard time getting technology to work for them; even the simplest things seem to trip them up. I feel like I'm trying to teach them a foreign language, that's hard for them to pronounce. Watching me click around normally is hard for them to follow and they usually ask me to repeat myself. It feels like I'm trying to make conversation with someone who's struggling with the basics of an unfamiliar language. Things that feel obvious to me, like running updates to fix bugs, are often met with blank stares.
I imagine this is similar to a watered down version of the experience of children of first-generation immigrants. While I do my best to be patient, there are times when I can't help but laugh like I do when people use idioms that don't translate properly.
