I'm considering starting a podcast to explore how people end up taking different career paths. My hypothesis is that people limit their career options to what they know from people in their family, role models, and companies that aggressively market themselves to prospective hires, which may be surprisingly narrow.
Growing up I could describe differences between medical sub-specialities because my parents were doctors, but anything loosely business-related blurred together because I'd had minimal exposure. While this was obviously a huge over-simplification, I suspect everyone does this to some degree.
By hearing the personal stories of those who have taken different career paths, I hope that listeners will gain a greater appreciation for what others do professionally and for how they got there. Whether it's shipping a new product or providing a seamless customer experience, a lot happens behind the scenes.
