Cold showers

Recently, I read an article about the benefits of taking cold showers. At first, I was skeptical that there'd be any benefits beyond increasing my willpower to do something uncomfortable. But, I decided to give it a try. I wanted to satisfy my curiosity to see if these authors were onto something.

I've been pleasantly surprised. After ten showers, I'm starting to look forward to the cold. Maybe it's just psychosomatic, but here are some of my perceived benefits:

  • Improved mood and energy. Cold water releases endorphins, the same hormone responsible for runner's high.
  • Increased metabolism and circulation. Exposure to cold naturally stimulates production of brown fat, which is involved in burning energy.
  • Better sleep.
  • Less dry skin. Hot water opens your pores and washes away natural oils. Cold showers keep close your pores and protects your skin's natural oils.
