Thinking about opportunities
Many of my classmates have opted to work in harsher work cultures with attractive compensation, so they can be finished job searching and enjoy their last year of grad school.
For those still figuring things out, discussions about opportunities are centered on four areas:
- The type of work
- Culture
- Location
- Compensation
We spend the most time discussing culture because the type of work, location, and compensation are usually straight forward.
Pin pointing a good culture fit is hard. Without having worked somewhere it's hard to understand the differences between actual cultural norms and those that are advertised. To get more reference points, many people did two short internships to make it easier to do an apples to apples comparison. But, making use of this data is tricky because decisions have to be made before offers expire.
