The internet is reinforcing political echo chambers
In theory, the internet should make it easier for readers to be exposed to views from across the political spectrum. But, because Facebook gets paid for clicks, they show us stories they think we'll agree with. As a result, we're suffering from confirmation bias, which is pushing our opinions to the extremes. We can't afford to shy away from disagreement. We need to find more ways to cultivate mutual understanding instead of highlighting difference.
Most people agree that search engines should provide "unbiased" results. If they didn't, they'd be in a position to shape the truth, which would jeopardize the legitimacy of the democratic process. So, given people are increasingly gathering news on Facebook, it seems like a similar standard should apply. I hope they'll introduce tools to make it easier to understand opposing views. Our democracy depends on it.
