Self-censorship

Many people are uncomfortable visiting websites like WikiLeaks because they're afraid that it could look suspicious and eventually come back to haunt them. The fact that this question even crosses people's minds demonstrates how surveillance is changing people's behavior. Unfortunately, this form of self-censorship is particularly insidious because people start to forget that they're doing it. And subconsciously they begin to avoid thinking about certain topics altogether.

Fear of asking controversial questions, leads to worse information for everyone and less oversight, making it easier for people to abuse positions of authority, which makes people more fearful of asking controversial questions. So, if you value freedom of thought and freedom of expression, resist unwarranted surveillance. National security concerns are insufficient justifications for undermining the fabric of a free and open society if they erode the values that they're meant to protect.
