Parking in perpendicular spaces
When parking in a garage, do you pull in driving forward or backwards? In the US, most people park driving forward (76% according to AAA), meaning they will pull out in reverse. In contrast, when I've traveled in Asia, I've noticed that the default is the opposite.
I'm curious how these defaults developed, given that it's well documented that it's safer to back into parking spaces. Maybe it's a reflection on cultural attitudes toward delayed gratification since it takes more effort to back into parking spaces in the short-term to save time in the future. Or, maybe it's because parking spaces are larger in the US.
Regardless, this is a good reminder that prevalence of behavior is not a good proxy for what I want to be my default behavior. What other culturally learned habits should I consider changing?
