Net neutrality at risk
In emerging markets, it's becoming increasingly common for phone companies to compromise net neutrality and give free unlimited access to Facebook, Twitter, and Whatsapp. While arguably, in the short-term, this benefits rural populations who otherwise wouldn't be able to afford meaningful access to the internet, I'm vehemently against any breach of net neutrality.
The current market dynamic has created a feedback loop that'll be difficult to break. Companies, already dominant in their markets, are securing partnerships that effectively give them monopolies over both people's communication and information. Unfortunately, this concentration of power is risky because companies can be coerced or shut down by unapologetic governments (e.g. Whatsapp in Brazil), leaving users without alternatives or the ability to switch.
So, while it may be painful in the short-term, it's important to lay a solid foundation for a sustainable and de-centralized market.
