Limiting shop talk
When socializing, it's easy to talk about work since that's where we spend the most time. But, it's important to remember that by talking about subjects that require specific knowledge, you're making it difficult for others to contribute to the conversation. I'm not saying these topics should be out of bounds, but you should be cognizant of how much you talk about them. And if you're talking about work, make sure to explain any jargon so others can contribute their opinions.
As the world becomes increasingly multidisciplinary, looking at problems from many different perspectives is becoming increasingly important. Don't fall into the habit of only talking in an echo chamber with people who do the same things as you. Make it clear that you want to learn about what other people are working on and about the challenges they're facing.
