Internet access and the postal service
Should we classify internet access as a public utility? While I agree that everyone should have access to the internet, it's dangerous to trust government to provide or choose who provides citizens with access to information that may be against the interests of those in office.
Instead of granting local monopolies to internet service providers, like we do with power and water utilities, we should consider an approach similar to the postal service.
The postal service ensures that there is at least one option for people to send letters and parcels, but where it falls short, there is an active private market (e.g. FedEx, UPS, and DHL). For internet access, this would mean ensuring subsidized broadband access with net neutrality for everyone. Private companies (e.g. Comcast and AT&T) would then be forced to compete more on customer service and trust.
