Drones and line of sight
Drone uses range from automated delivery via sky highways to improved diligence on real estate to search and rescue. The one big problem is that drones are still heavily reliant on line of sight with their controllers. So, what happens when drones fly out of range?
Those with unsophisticated software continue flying on their current heading, typically making them unrecoverable. Those with more sophisticated software will stop and hover or stop and land when they stop receiving instructions. If a drone were carrying merchandise, neither of these outcomes is acceptable. Either inventory would be lost or it would be sitting still, in the air or on the ground, and vulnerable to theft.
I'm curious to see when lower-end drones will start allowing pilots to specify desired behavior (e.g. landing coordinates) when a drone loses line of sight with the controller.
