Don't confuse complexity with value

When something is hard to explain, it's tempting to conclude that it must be valuable. While this is true sometimes, in general the ability to explain a concept simply is the sign of mastery that unlocks value. Businesses that have simple value propositions are easier for customers to understand, making it easier for them to get paid.

In school, students who tackle complex ideas are typically rewarded. And unsurprisingly, many of these gifted students gravitate towards jobs that are complicated when they graduate. Unfortunately, that complexity doesn't always translate into economic value. Being conceptually simple isn't a weakness. In fact, I suspect people frequently pass up the opportunity to work on ideas because they're embarrassed by how simple they are.

Stop worrying about whether people will think that the projects you're working on are complex enough to warrant your attention.
